GM's software stack untangled: Techline Connect, SPS2 programming, GDS2 diagnostics and Tech2Win for older vehicles — which model years need which tool, and which subscription or package to buy.

Which GM software do you need? For 2013+ GM vehicles: Techline Connect is the launcher, GDS2 does the diagnostics and SPS2 does the module programming — all delivered through a GM online subscription. For roughly 1992–2013 vehicles you instead need Tech2Win (the software version of the Tech 2 scan tool), available in our Tech2Win + GDS2 package. Repair procedures and wiring diagrams live separately in GM Service Information (SI).

The GM software stack, untangled

GM's diagnostic ecosystem confuses more buyers than any other manufacturer's because the names have changed twice and the tools overlap by model year. Here is the whole stack in one table:

ToolWhat it doesModel yearsHow you get it
Techline Connect (TLC)The launcher/portal that hosts GDS2, SPS2, SI and Tech2Win in one loginAll (interface for the tools below)Included with a GM online subscription
GDS2 (Global Diagnostic System 2)Full diagnostics: codes, live data, bi-directional controls, guided testsGlobal-A and newer (~2010+)Subscription, or offline in the Tech2Win + GDS2 package
SPS2 (Service Programming System)Module programming/reflash with VIN-matched calibrations from GM's servers~1993 to currentOnline only — USA or Europe subscription
Tech2WinSoftware emulation of the classic Tech 2 scan tool~1992–2013 (pre-Global-A)Tech2Win + GDS2 package

Techline Connect: the front door

Techline Connect replaced the old TIS2Web portal as GM's single sign-on for everything: it launches GDS2 for diagnostics, SPS2 for programming and links out to SI. You do not buy Techline Connect by itself — it comes with a GM subscription. For a full walkthrough of the interface, installation and first login, read our dedicated GM Techline Connect guide, and keep the Techline Connect user guide handy for reference.

SPS2: programming GM modules

SPS2 (the successor to SPS inside Techline Connect) downloads VIN-specific calibration files from GM's servers and flashes them into the car's modules — after a module replacement, for a TSB-mandated update, or when adding equipment. Because calibrations come from GM live, SPS2 only works with an active online subscription:

You will also need a J2534 pass-thru interface (GM MDI 2 or a quality J2534 clone) and a stable battery maintainer — programming interruptions are the number-one cause of bricked GM modules.

GDS2: diagnostics for Global-A and newer

GDS2 is GM's diagnostic application for the Global-A electrical architecture (phased in around 2010) and everything since. It reads every module, streams live data, runs bi-directional tests and output controls. GDS2 is available online through the subscriptions above, or offline in our Tech2Win + GDS2 bundle for shops that want diagnostics without a recurring subscription. The GDS2 user guide covers the application in depth.

Tech2Win: the tool for older GM vehicles

Anything before Global-A — roughly 1992 through 2013 depending on model — predates GDS2 and needs the classic Tech 2 tool, or its software twin Tech2Win, which runs the same Tech 2 environment on a Windows laptop through your J2534/MDI interface. Our Tech2Win + GDS2 package covers both eras in one install, and the Tech2Win and TIS manuals plus our guide to Tech2Win custom update modes cover advanced usage. Prefer the physical handheld? See the GM Tech 2 scan tool guide.

Don't forget Service Information (SI)

None of the tools above include repair instructions. Torque specs, wiring diagrams, module configuration steps and TSBs live in GM Service Information (SI), sold as its own subscription. Our GM SI explainer covers exactly what it contains, and the ACDelco TDS guide explains how SI, diagnostics and programming fit together in GM's ecosystem for independent shops.

Which setup should you buy?

  • Late-model GM work (2013+), including programming: the GM USA online subscription (or the Europe SPS2 subscription for EU-spec cars) + a J2534 interface.
  • Diagnostics only, no recurring cost: the offline Tech2Win + GDS2 package — it covers 1992 to current for fault reading and bi-directional tests.
  • Full independent-shop setup: subscription + Tech2Win/GDS2 package + SI access. That is dealer-level capability across three decades of GM vehicles.

FAQs

What is the difference between SPS2 and GDS2?

GDS2 diagnoses (reads codes, live data, runs tests); SPS2 programs (flashes VIN-matched calibrations into modules). Most late-model jobs use both: GDS2 to find the fault, SPS2 to program the replacement module.

Can I download Tech2Win for free?

Versions floating around forums are typically incomplete, virus-laden or missing the emulated Tech 2 cards for specific brands. Our Tech2Win + GDS2 package ships a complete, working install with remote setup assistance included.

Do I need a GM subscription to use GDS2?

No — GDS2 diagnostics can run offline (as in our Tech2Win + GDS2 bundle). A live GM online subscription is only required for SPS2 programming and for the always-current online GDS2 inside Techline Connect.

What hardware do I need for GM diagnostics and programming?

A GM MDI 2 or a quality J2534 pass-thru interface, a Windows 10/11 laptop, and a battery maintainer for programming sessions. The same interface works across Tech2Win, GDS2 and SPS2.
