If you work on Jaguar or Land Rover vehicles, you have almost certainly hit the same question every independent workshop hits: do I need JLR Pathfinder or JLR SDD? The answer is simpler than most forum threads make it look, because JLR drew a hard line through its model range: the software you need is decided by the vehicle's electrical architecture, not by preference.
Quick answer: Use JLR SDD for Jaguar and Land Rover models up to around 2014 (pre-DoIP architecture), and JLR Pathfinder for 2014-and-newer DoIP vehicles. Workshops that see both generations need both applications and one dual-protocol DoIP VCI that supports each of them.
The 2014 split: why two JLR diagnostic programs exist
Until the mid-2010s, every Jaguar and Land Rover used a conventional CAN-based network, and JLR's dealer tool for those vehicles was SDD (Symptom Driven Diagnostics). Starting with the 2014 model year (the L405 Range Rover, L494 Range Rover Sport and X760 Jaguar XE were among the first), JLR moved to a new high-speed architecture that communicates over DoIP — Diagnostics over Internet Protocol. SDD cannot talk to these networks at all, so JLR released a completely new application: Pathfinder (also seen as JLR TOPIx Pathfinder).

What JLR SDD does (and which vehicles it covers)
JLR SDD is the full dealer-level diagnostic and programming platform for pre-DoIP vehicles — roughly Jaguar models 2005–2017 and Land Rover models 2005–2016, with the exact cutover varying by model line. With SDD you can:
- Read and clear fault codes across every module, with JLR's symptom-driven test plans

Rule of thumb: if the vehicle was designed after 2013, assume Pathfinder; if it was on sale before 2013, assume SDD. Transition-year vehicles (2014–2017) follow their platform, not their registration date.

Can I use SDD on a 2018 Range Rover?
No. Vehicles built from around 2014 onwards moved to the DoIP electrical architecture and are only supported by JLR Pathfinder. SDD covers Jaguar and Land Rover models up to roughly the 2014–2017 transition, depending on the model.
Do Pathfinder and SDD use the same interface cable?
